Adventure Reading Camp
Starting Wednesday, February 12th!
Adventure Reading Camp is a phonics-based after-school reading support program led by Pastor Phil and Lauren Martyn. Both have backgrounds in language, reading, and writing tutoring with children and adults.
We want to invest in families with 1st through 3rd grade children who struggle in reading by providing a space for support and practice. Our program has three key aspects: fulfilling a child’s need to be active while learning, individualized phonics teaching and support from an invested adult, and the inspiration and encouragement of a good story. Phonics has been proven to help students at a variety of levels, including students who may struggle with dyslexia.
Each weekly session will be structured around:
Active Game Time - Games serve as a way for kids to connect, relax, and engage with their fellow campers and tutors.
Phonics Lesson - Repetition, active involvement, and a little silliness keep kids engaged through the lesson time and teach or build skills.
Buddy Reading - Small groups working with an adult practice reading and get feedback, encouragement, and individualized support.
Story Time - Large group read alouds strengthen vocabulary and inspire them with a good story.
Sessions will run Wednesdays 4:30pm-5:45pm. Participants are then invited to stay for a kid-friendly dinner and our Wednesday night Awana program that runs 6:30pm-8:00pm. All of these programs are provided at no cost.
